Review: Chamku

Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films

Chamku begins with scenes of bucolic bliss in Bihar. A farmer and his family are scampering in the swaying fields. It's so pretty that you know it's doomed.

Sure enough, before you know it, the father is shot dead and the son gravely wounded.

He is rescued by a Naxalite leader, who reads Pushkin and plans operation with equal dexterity. The leader christens the little boy Chamku and rears him to be a killer, played by Bobby Deol.

When the leader is killed, an intelligent agency officer makes a deal with Chamku: he now becomes a state sponsored assassin.

Until this point, Chamku is ferociously effective. Director Kabir Kaushik who earlier made the gritty eastern UP-police drama Seher, orchestrates the tragedy with an unflinching eye.

He has a feel for the rhythms and textures of the badlands. But the film starts faltering when the action moves to Mumbai.

Suddenly we see Chamku staring moodily at the sea wearing designer goggles, leather pants and a spiffy jacket. He also falls in love with a school teacher who channeling Sushmita Sen from Main Hoon Na, dresses exclusively in chiffon saris and sexy blouses.

Of course Chamku now wants to quit the killing fields but the only exit available is death.

Like in Seher, Kaushik is trying to create a damning portrait of the system. Everyone, from the minister to Chamku, is a pawn in this vast network of money and power.

Bobby Deol as a Naxalite requires serious suspension of disbelief but with impassive eyes and grim mouth, he strives hard to make it convincing.

But both Kaushik and Deol are hobbled by the screenplay. The plot movement is jerky, the characters are half-baked and the pace is slowed down by unnecessary songs, including an inexplicable item number.

Beyond a point, the incessant violence becomes predictable and tiresome. Chamku had the potential to be an insightful movie about a brutal system but the film manages to be only intermittently engaging. This is strictly average fare.

Death Race (2008) online movie and download

Death Race: Action. Starring Jason Statham, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson and Joan Allen. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. (R. 104 minutes. At Bay Area theaters.)

One more reason why Joan Allen is the most underrated actress of her generation: While Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton are fine, multifaceted talents, neither one could pull off the line "Activate the Death Heads!" or "Release the Dreadnaught!" without looking completely ridiculous.

Hiring Allen to play an ice queen prison warden was the only good sense demonstrated by the makers of "Death Race," an ill-advised and severely wussified remake of the 1975 exploitation film "Death Race 2000." The combination of good actors and terrible dialogue might have allowed the film a chance at minor cult status, if it weren't for the frustratingly inept action sequences.

Perhaps worst of all, the makers of this movie have removed the political satire that was infused in the original Roger Corman-produced film and replaced it with scenes from "The Shawshank Redemption." No pedestrians get run over for points in this film, but there is a kindly older prisoner who dispenses advice, lots of male bonding in the auto shop and even a moment between stars Jason Statham and Tyrese Gibson that's reminiscent of the Morgan Freeman-Tim Robbins "Zihuatanejo" scene, complete with an unintended sexual subtext.

Blame this debacle on director-screenwriter Paul W.S. Anderson, who makes movies as if he's been interning under "BloodRayne" hack director Uwe Boll. Both approach filmmaking the way that your high school lunch lady approached cuisine: Individual ingredients are recognizable, but the finished product is shapeless glop. While it might be filling, no one with any taste could possibly call it good.

The remake begins, promisingly enough, with product placement for Pabst Blue Ribbon. This is a world gone mad, but at least you can still get good cheap beer. Statham is Jensen Ames, an ex-con trying to make an honest living who's been framed for murder and tricked into participating in a drive-to-the-death racing exhibition. Ames' main rival is Machine Gun Joe (Gibson, in the Sylvester Stallone role). His crew chief, Coach, is played by an uncharacteristically sage Ian McShane.

The difference between the two movies is instantly apparent. In the 1975 version, Corman and director Paul Bartel imagined a detailed future, then melded extreme violence and satire into one darkly funny stew. Hospital workers wheel out elderly patients on Euthanasia Day, intended as sacrificial lambs for the game's sick point system. Popular driver Frankenstein (David Carradine) veers around the old folks, and takes out a few doctors and nurses instead.

Anderson's new "Death Race" is bloody and violent, but it doesn't attempt to explore its dystopian world beyond a few lines of text in the beginning explaining the failing U.S. economy and privatization of prisons. Almost the entire film takes place within the grounds of a drab industrial penal facility - all the easier to shoot "Death Race" in Canada or Romania or whatever country gave the best tax break. As for the race, it's designed like a video game, down to the flashing lights that the drivers roll over to activate their guns and smoke screens.

All of the above might have been forgiven if the action sequences weren't shot in close-up, shaky-cam quick edits, guaranteeing that no single camera angle will be used for more than three seconds. Michael Bay has been doing this with his driving scenes for years, usually in small doses. In "Death Race," this technique is the primary means of shooting the entire film. There may have been some really good stunt work, but it was either replaced by CGI or lost on the cutting-room floor.

It also becomes apparent that, despite plenty of executions throughout the film, no innocents are getting killed. Watching a "Death Race" movie without a single dead pedestrian is like eating a box of Frosted Flakes without any high fructose corn syrup. This might as well be a "Herbie, the Love Bug" remake.

That leaves much of the burden of entertainment on Allen, who really is excellent. There aren't too many Tony-winning, Steppenwolf Theatre-trained actresses who will look at a script that contains the line "OK, -sucker. F- with me and we'll see who s- on the sidewalk," and say, "You know what, I'm on board."

Allen delivers that line with so much skill and grace, she'll almost make you forget that you're watching a bad movie.

-- Advisory: This film contains violence, gore, strong sexual innuendos and profanity. That last warning doesn't, however, apply to Ian McShane, who is surprisingly f-bomb-free when traveling outside the Dakota Territory.

DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - India opening batsman Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the one-day series against Sri Lanka after injuring his ankle in training.

India's leading batsman in the test series, Sehwag twisted his ankle in training on Sunday and missed the opener of the five-match series a day later, a contest India lost by eight wickets.

Sehwag will return home and a decision on whether to send out a replacement has yet to be made.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted the loss of the in-form opener was a major blow.

"He was a batsman in top form but that's the way it goes in cricket," Dhoni told reporters.

India are already without talismanic batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who has an elbow injury.

Watch out for
Sanath Jayasuriya: The last time he played India, Jayasuriya cracked a match-winning 125, his sixth ODI hundred against them. Jayasuriya relishes playing the Indians - no one has scored as many runs against them as he has - and even more so at home, where he averages 46.44 at a strike-rate of exactly a run a ball. His record in Dambulla isn't as impressive - an average of 26.23, with just one half-century in 15 innings - but against India he'll fancy his chances of turning that around.

Yuvraj Singh: has announced he is in peak form for this series with an astonishing 121-ball 172 in the practice match against a Sri Lankan XI. The absence of Sachin Tendulkar places an even greater burden on Yuvraj, who will be keen to prove he can handle that responsibility as well as tackle the mighty Sri Lankan spinners.

Team news
Sri Lanka have packed their squad with nine batsmen, which means three will probably miss out. Kumar Sangakkara had opened the batting through most of the Asia Cup, and he could do so again, allowing the team to slot in five specialist bowlers, with Chaminda Vaas coming in at No. 7. Dilhara Fernando struggled in the tour game against the Indians and is unlikely to make the cut.

Sri Lanka (likely) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Chamara Kapugedera, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Chaminda Vaas, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Thilan Thushara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

India are likely to play five bowlers, which means Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha will form a two-pronged spin attack. With Zaheer Khan a certainty, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel and RP Singh will fight for two spots. Pathan's batting prowess could give him the edge, while Munaf, being the only right-arm bowler in the mix, could get the nod over RP.

India (likely) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Munaf Patel.

Pitch & conditions
The pitch looks firm, with a fair amount of grass which is likely to be shaved off before the game begins. The weather is likely to be clear as well, and the conditions suggest the toss might not be that big a factor.

Stats & Trivia

* Sri Lanka have won 13 out of 18 ODIs at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. Before their two defeats to England in October last year, they were on a nine-match winning streak, dating back to February 2004.

* India have won two out of five matches here, but have lost all three games against Sri Lanka.

* Muttiah Muralitharan has a bowling average of 13.34 and an economy rate of 3.28 runs per over at this ground, with 29 wickets from 12 ODIs. Sri Lanka have won each of the last five matches here when Murali has played.

* Teams batting first have won 12 out of 23 games, averaging 23.66 runs per wicket and 4.14 runs per over. Teams chasing have won 11, and average 23.92 runs per wicket and 4.04 runs per over. In the ten day games, teams batting first and chasing have won five times each.

* Rahul Dravid is the only batsman to score an ODI century at this ground - he made 104 against UAE in 2004. Sri Lanka's highest here is an unbeaten 97 by Marvan Atapattu against South Africa the same year. (Click here for the highest scores in Dambulla.)

* Spinners have taken 139 wickets here at an average of 24.05 and an economy rate of 3.95. The fast bowlers have been equally successful, with 178 wickets at 26.96 and an economy rate of 3.93.

Quotes
"With Sanath in form it's a great thing. The starts he gets makes a huge different. If he stays for 10-15 overs, it's likely we will get a good start. He's like Sehwag for India. That gives a different dimension to our set up."
Mahela Jayawardene highlights the importance of Sanath Jayasuriya in the Sri Lankan batting line-up

"Sehwag is the sort who takes a bit of risk at times. Whenever he gets us that start we have a fair chance of winning. He's in very good nick, so is Gambhir. Both played well in the Tests so they have some added responsibility on them."
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's captain, suggests that the openers will be key for his team as well

Cast: Sudeep, Amruta Khanvilkar, Ahsaas Channa, Kenny Desai and Ashwini
KalsekarDirector: Ram Gopal VarmaProducer: Azam Khan/Parvez Damania

Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films
The lesson to be learned from Phoonk is: be very careful about whom you hire and be even more careful about firing them because you never know which disgruntled employee might turn out to be a black magic queen.

Phoonk is about Rajeev, an affluent, educated man who doesn't believe in God or superstitions. But after he fires two employees for cheating him, his life gets ferociously creepy.

For one, his young daughter starts to talk like a man and at one point, she even levitates off the bed. Eventually, Rajeev sees the error of his non-believing ways and goes to a blind baba, who armed with three prongs and a fierce silver ring, literally sniffs out the culprits and helps Rajeev to defeat them.

Director Ram Gopal Varma has effectively tackled horror before in Bhoot. In that film, he imbued everyday things like elevators and Mumbai high rises with a sense of dread so even the normal seemed scary.

Phoonk is the exact opposite. Varma strains to create dread by placing his camera at weird angles, repeatedly trying to make stuffed toys look ominous and he even goes for the horror film cliché of an evil crow as sentinel. It's cheap, B-grade horror, basically Ramsay with a bigger budget.

Varma doesn't use his lead actress very efficiently either. Children can be superbly scary because that's precisely what we least expect them to be.

In films like The Exorcist, The Omen and more recently, The Orphanage, little kids have successfully made us scream. But poor Ehsaas Channa, who plays the possessed kid here, is saddled with an infantile script.

Of course Varma propagates black magic and blind superstition in Phoonk but in my book, his worse offense is that he doesn't either scare or entertain us.

At the end of the film, the blind baba declares: Har cheez ka jawab nahin hota.

Indeed. So with every Ram Gopal Varma film, we are doomed to keep asking, what happened to the director who gave us Rangeela, Satya and Company.

Phoonk is tedious mumbo-jumbo. If you want a good fright, rent The Exorcist instead.

Candidates who have not taken the scratch cards in the first phase of counselling can obtain them from the nearest counselling center from August 26 onwards.
He also urged the students not to panic as the web-based counselling is not based on ‘first come; first serve’ policy.
Similarly, the final phase counselling that was earlier scheduled from September 2 - 24 has also been changed to September 8 - 30. So far 64,894 candidates have taken admission into engineering courses.
The Council has also allotted additional intake of 6,000 seats and gave permission to 24 engineering colleges making the final tally of colleges to 521. This means that there would be around 55,958 vacant seats for the final phase of counselling.
The counselling for admission into biotechnology and pharmacy courses under the BiPC stream would be held from September 1 - 6 (except on Sep 3). The classes would commence by the first week of October.

Form guide (last 5 ODIs)

India LWLWW

England v South Africa, 1st ODI, Headingley with out buffering live updated score and video

    Preview:
After a rain-aborted workout against Scotland on Monday at least gave a resurgent Andrew Flintoff the chance to impress, England face South Africa at Leeds for the first ODI.
The South Africans will prove a different kettle of fish for Kevin Pietersen and company given that the tourists are fresh from a 2-1 Test series win - their first in England in almost half a century.
In addition, England must do without Ryan Sidebottom, who has been ruled out with a hip problem, while Chris Tremlett is also suffering with a heel injury. Paul Collingwood will be in the middle of his 4-match ban and will be unavailable as well.
With England's last 15 one-day outings having brought only five wins South Africa are favourites to win the five-match ODI series which follows on from Wednesday. Nonetheless, with Flintoff getting back in the groove following his Scottish figures of 3-21 England have everything to play for.
Pietersen has meanwhile promoted Owais Shah to number three in the one-day team's batting order - although the rain in Edinburgh precluded the Middlesex batsman from getting an early chance to shine.
"Owais is going to bat at number three for the simple fact that I think he was wasted at number seven," explained Pietersen. "He's a high-scoring, quick-scoring cricket player who plays cricket shots to get boundaries and I think down the order he was wasted.
Pietersen has also pushed the recalled Matt Prior to the top of the batting order and, while it was Flintoff who caught the eye with Monday's three wickets, the skipper said that his overall strategy was now starting to fall into place.
"It's key now to identify players and roles in the team. I've identified how I want to play and it's a case of getting the confidence in the players to do what they need to do and that's what I'm prepared to do.
Meanwhile, South Africa will see the back of Herschelle Gibbs. Albie Morkel has been ruled out with a shoulder injury but brother Morne should play despite a niggling sidestrain injury. ODI specialists like JP Duminy, Vernon Philander and off spinner Johan Botha are also going to be part of the mix.
    Teams:

South Africa (From): Graeme Smith(c), Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Jean-Paul Duminy, Mark Boucher(w), Vernon Philander, Johan Botha, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini, Justin Lee Ontong, Albie Morkel, Hashim Amla, Andre Nel
England (From): Ian Bell, Matthew Prior(w), Owais Shah, Kevin Pietersen(c), Ravinder Bopara, Andrew Flintoff, Luke Wright, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Tim Bresnan, Samit Patel, Stephen Harmison, Ryan Sidebottom, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Chris Tremlett
