Vice President condemns Mehrauli blast


New Delhi, Sept 27 : Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari has condemned the blast that occurred today at a flower market in Mehrauli area of New Delhi.


He expressed deep anguish that the blast has caused fatalities and casualties among innocent people, especially young children who were present at the blast site.

The Vice President said that such mindless and reprehensible acts of violence are intended to disturb peace and impede our national progress.

He also appealed the people to maintain calm and expressed his sympathy for the families of those killed and injured.

New Delhi, Sept 27 : Eyewitnesses of today’s bomb blast in Mehrauli, in which four persons were reportedly killed and fifteen injured, said that two young men wearing full mask helmets came riding on a black motorcycle and threw two packets wrapped in newspapers in a busy market near Andheria More in Mehrauli area which caused the explosions. One Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Mehrauli, said that one couple who were traveling on a Scooty were overtaken by the two men riding the bike.

“According to the lady who was sitting behind her husband on the Scooty, the two men on the bike overtook them and appeared to be in a hurry.

Immediately after overtaking them the two men threw two packets wrapped in newspapers and soon there was a huge smoke ball. It was a bomb blast. The two packets appeared like papayas being wrapped in newspapers”, Kuldeep told media persons minutes after the bomb blast.

Kuldeep further said that there was a deep ditch formed at the place where the blast took place, and soon after the blast everybody was taken aback.

Another witness named Kale said that there was a heavy rush in the market when the bomb blast took place. “I saw a huge ball of smoke just a few meters away where I was standing. It was a bomb blast. Later I saw several people lying on the ground in pool of blood. Among the dead was one child, while several other kids were injured,” said Kale.

Meanwhile, DCP, South Delhi HGS Dhaliwal that two persons were seen riding a motorbike and entering the market. They hurled the bombs inside the market and fled the scene, he added.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil, according to channels, has met Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee to consider measures to ensure security in the area. (ANI)

15 injured in explosion in Delhi market

New Delhi - At least 15 people were injured in an explosion in a market in Indian capital New Delhi on Saturday, media reports said.

The explosion occurred in a shop in the flower market in the southern Mehrauli area at 2.15 pm (8.45 am GMT), NDTV network reported.

Witnesses told the news channel that it was a "big" bomb-blast and the explosive was planted by two men on a motorcycle.

But the police did not confirm whether it was a terrorist attack and were investigating the nature of the explosion.

Firemen, ambulances and police teams rushed to the scene.

The blast comes exactly two weeks after the city was rocked by a series of five blasts in markets that killed 24 people and injured at least 100. (dpa
